Untuck Your Pelvis, Please.

There have been so many beautiful conversations circling haia this month. Winter has given us permission to slow down, to be reflective, to listen more carefully. What’s been striking is how profound the insights have been, yet how simple and light they feel when they land in the body.

One of the biggest conversations we’ve been toiling with is the nature of the human body itself, specifically how the way you hold yourself either allows vitality, blood, breath, energy, and fluid to move freely through your system or quietly shuts it down.

This is where I hold what might be my most unpopular opinion.

And it’s also the cornerstone of why haia doesn’t just change bodies, it changes lives.

When it comes to alignment, most Pilates teachers are trained to prioritize a posterior pelvic tilt in the majority of exercises. And to be clear, it is important to be able to move through all three pelvic positions, posterior, neutral, and anterior. That adaptability is part of being truly functional. To have soft hips that can move and shift, versus a rigid body trying to hold itself together.

But here’s where I have other ideas.

Training your body to live primarily in a posterior tilt, especially in daily movement and in practices meant to improve how you function in real life, is not healthy. I would even say it is detrimental to your physical and mental and emotional health.

The pelvis is the cornerstone of your health.

Structurally, it is the foundation of the spine. Energetically, it is the center from which all life initiates. When the pelvis is chronically tucked under, as it so often is from sitting in chairs, hunching over devices, and bracing ourselves against the world, we cut ourselves off from vitality, wisdom, and most importantly the ability to be fully present.

For women especially, the pelvis holds extraordinary significance. This is where the womb lives. This is where deep feminine intelligence resides. This is not metaphorical, it’s felt, embodied, cellular. Yet modern life has purposefully trained us out of this center. 

We sit all day, consume content endlessly, and collapse forward and down, shutting ourselves off from what is around us and becoming drawn into a virtual reality that seeks to polarize humanity and pin you against others.

And slowly, subtly, we lose access to the wisdom of our own bodies and the ability to be present and alert.

The pelvis becomes locked into a posterior tilt, the hips become “tight”, the breath becomes labored, and we label it depression and anxiety. The spine loses its natural curves, and life force and energy no longer move upward, it stagnates. This is true on both an esoteric level and a physical, chemical, and biological one. Your organs and glands no longer have the space to adequately move fluids and nutrients around the body or flush out toxins.

You might not realize it, but reclaiming the pelvis is about reclaiming life.

At haia, this is happening, but we’re not really talking about it, and I think that is a mistake. 

I see it every single time. When women begin to orient the pelvis in a way that supports life instead of suppressing it, something incredible and undeniable happens.

They come alive.

Their breath moves through them as if for the first time, full, unrestricted, without force. Their eyes light up like the moon, and a genuine smile spreads across their face. There is a moment of recognition. It is life changing without extremes. 

When we position the pelvis correctly, the lungs finally have space to move forward. Breath drops deeper into the body, creating space for trapped and stagnant energy to move upward. Their eyes brighten. It is undeniable. They are radiant and fully present.

This is embodiment.

This is liberation and recognition, not in a dramatic, destabilizing way, but in a grounded, sustainable one. A quiet kundalini awakening without the theatrics. Without the chaos of needing to change your whole life to be awakened and healthy.

Just aliveness moving upward through an aligned body that is available to be present.

The physical changes at haia are undeniable. Our community’s bodies are transformed. Posture improves, people feel able, stable, happy. Chronic pain dissolves. They are stronger and know their capacity.

But the deeper changes are harder to put into words.

Women describe it as clarity. Decisiveness. Stability. Relaxation. The feeling of being able to take on their life with their hands on the wheel.

They become a force.

It isn’t something I can explain or convince you of intellectually. You have to be called to it. The practice is confronting, and it requires self-responsibility.

The changes speak for themselves, and your life will reflect it.

This is why we do what we do at haia. Not to contort the body into shapes it was never meant to hold, but to restore it to its natural intelligence, your natural intelligence, and your ability to connect with yourself and be self aware.

This is not self improvement. It is self return.

And when a woman is rooted in her body, connected to her center, and able to feel herself fully, she is no longer easily swayed, silenced, or fragmented. She becomes steady. She becomes discerning. She becomes powerful in a way that is quiet, embodied, and undeniable.

It starts in the pelvis.
